THE DUBBING INDUSTRY IN MEXICO

The most industry of dubbing is in Mexico, because the people of latinamerica prefer the mexican dubbing.

A mexican tv show "Alta Definición con Alvaro Cueva" create a reportage about this industry when ask to the audience "what actors they want to know" "How to be a dubbing actor" all the question were respond for the actors that are profesionals, the show durated about one hour and half but the video is only a part of the reportage.

One of the most avowed actors of dubbing is HumbertoVelez, his principal work is for give the voice to Homer Simpson. On the video he talks about his work with the character of the simpsons and another cartoons like "Family Guy", Roz on "Monters Inc." , Snowbell the cat of Stuart Little, etc.

Alvaro Cueva presented an actor of dubbing called Alvaro Obregon Inclan also known as "the shrek voice". He was the voice of bugs bunny in the first cartoon of Warner Brothers and Kakashi Hatake in the Japanese cartoon "Naruto"

If you want to be a a Dubbing actor, you should study to be an actor because is not "i'm only use my voice and that's it"

You put your voice in a cartoon or with a real actor but you need to act like the character that you've got in that moment. If you didn't feel the emotions of the cartoon, it will be just a boring work of dubbing.

Mr. Obregon said in the interview that when he made "shrek" he said to the producers "I want a good pay, a thousand or million or pesos (mexican money)" but they said no and a lot of actors were fighting to be the shrek's voice for FREE! just for the only reason that work for Dreamworks Company is a huge opportunity but Alvaro Obregon made the dubbing (nobody knows the pay that he received)

"I was a little bit angry because when the proyect the movie in Latinamerica, the audience are listening to Alvaro Obrego Cueva NOT Mike Myers and he received millions of dollars to make shrek but nobody watch or hear Mike Myers, even in America the movie for Hispanic people is with my voice" Said Mr. Obregon about his work

The actress Magda Giner that give her voice to Lois "Malcolm in the middle", Zim "Invader Zim" and Sylvia Fine "The Nanny" she said that the people that want to be in the dubbing industry has to respect this because is an art and you need a lot of practice and been prepairing for all the kind of works that exist in the biggest industries of dubbing

CHARACTERISTICS WISHED IN THE VOICE FOR THEWORK IN DUBBINGS

Depending on the performance, the peopleof all the ages and races  they are necessaryfor dubbings, taking into consideration that the  classesof oratorical help without importing theskill level.

Rhythm

You have to be capable to have rhythm inthe phrases, to be able to achieve a good dubbing, General In, when the persons speak, to  accelerate when they get excited or feel much unreturn on having  counted to history, in the dubbings, you have to be capable of    speaking to the same rhythm as the personage that you are  interpreting so that the words could be listened clearly.

Intonation

The dubbing also needs that you change the tones while you are  speaking. To practise opposite to a mirror can help.To speak only  and to practise to speak bychance during the transition between  tone. To fluctuate from a sharp voice, to a deeper tone without your voice remaining broken.

Respiration

You must be capable of controlling therespiration. The respiration  can affect the fluency of the phrase. Also it can be adistraction when you breathe heavier than most of the people, your respiration can  affect your yield.

Tone

It is possible that you have to fit the voicetone. Some projects can  need that you seak in a conversational tone, while others can need  that you do a droning or formal uniform tone.

To practise conversations in several tonescan help to that you do not become dependent on the only one.

THE USE OF “MEXICANISMOS” IN DUBBING AND SUBTITLING

"-¿Qué onda, carnal? -¿Qué rollo, cómo andas?- Pues ahí la llevo, con mucha chamba, ¿y tú? - Pues dos que tres de chamba, no me quejo, la neta." This is a conversation less formal where it’s used certain type of expressions that we call “mexicanismos”. Gómez De Silva (2001) in his Brief Dictionary of mexicanismos defines it as a word or locution from Spanish origin or indigenous which it’s characteristic from Mexican spanish, and allows to place between them voices from Mexican origin incorporated in spanish in general. But what happen when these expressions appear in movies and are translated in other language?

Nowadays some Mexican movies like “Y tu mamá también” (2001), “Amores perros” (2000) and “Rudo y Cursi” (2008), just to mention, have been recognized abroad because of Mexican folklore in the vocabulary. These characteristic features of our country have seen the light intensely in cinema and for many years began to dominate the industry of dubbing and subtitling in North - American cinemas. Also these particular expressions of our country are being seriously affected when they get into the phenomenon that Cucco (2010) call “cultural discount”, which consists in the loss of value and attractiveness of a product when it’s taken into a cultural system different than the native, the original, from where it was made and produced, and in the case of movies they face some problems of understanding contents, cultural adaptation or lack of identification with the characters and situations because they considerate them beyond the reality they live. This cultural discount try to decrease through the process of dubbing and subtitling of the films, changing in this way the national work of a country into transnational.

There is a process that consists in adapting the oral original texts of a movie without letting out essential information for the understanding of an audience, this procedure is called “condensation subtitles”, where its unavoidable a loss of information. Additionally the texts of subtitles omit some characteristics like the intonation and idiosyncratic vocal characteristics. Furthermore it’s complicated to translate the double sense exclusive from the native language.

In the case of dubbing, the main problem that faces is to synchronize the lip movement of the original actors with the recordings of artists dubbing, which is impossible to make perfect. Some possible advantages dubbing provides is that public can feel identified more easily when they hear their native language on screen.

Dubbing studios: FOX

Fox is similar to the Warner Bros. Dubbing although in recent years the children aimed productions has decayed, this is the result form the company selling their child-aimed  channel Fox Kids, to a mayor entertainment company, Disney.

The dubbing productions made by Fox, are limited to some studios located in Spain, for the Spanish version of their product and by Mexico for their Latin American distribution. 

The Simpsons

In Mexico there has been some controversy due to the fact that several of the voice actors for the prime show 'The Simpsons' had gone on strike, and in the end the dubbing studio responsable for the Latin American version of the show, Grabaciones y Doblajes Internacionales, decided to substitute the voices, of the protesting voice actors.

Most of the dubbing work by the Fox company are made in Mexico, by the dubbing company Doblajes Paris, located in Cuernavaca, Morelos.

MEXICAN DUBBING AND SUBBING COMPANIES

SDI Media Group of Mexico, is a Mexican dubbing company and translation of dialogues which is located in Mexico D.F. and its original name was Prime Dubb.

Among the projects made there, include Disney series like “Wizards od Waverly Place”, “Aaron Stone” and “Phineas & Ferb”, in addition most of DreamWorks movies, Paramount, Warner Bros. y 20^th Century Fox. Also offers other services like mixing, subtitling, editing and post-production. It was founded in 1996, with the name Prime Dubb by the actor, dubbing director and businessman Eduardo Giaccardi.

Since Audiomaster 3000 closed and disappeared, it became in one of the most recognized dubbing studios of México. In 2013, Eduardo Giaccardi left SDI Media to open a new company called Laboprime Dubbing Producers, so he was replaced by the actor and director Mario Castañeda, who took all his functions until mid-2014.

For over 18 years. SDI Media has been consolidated as a recognized enterprise by its quality and timely service. Noteworthy it has been decisive to count with a great team of professionals: translators, actors and technicians whom knowledge, dedication and constantly perfectionism, have consolidated the permanent development of SDI Media.

An important part of this study has been the actors and actresses. All of them professionals with university education, graduated of theater schools and experience on film, television, theater and radio.

Criticism and defense of dubbing

The dubbing has many detractors, especially in countries where this practice is not common. Opponents of the practice argue that devalues films or television programs, since the original soundtracks are closer to what you have created the director of the production. In some cases, dubbing can the less authentic film. In cases of poor quality dubbing synchronization of lip movements of the characters when talking may be lost.

Proponents argue that dubbing subtitled "polluter original image" that there is a significant reduction in the source text in subtitling and distracts the viewer, it can not be entirely focused on the image of the film for being outstanding subtitling.

In many European countries, Hollywood films are folded regularly and some people maintain that a creative translation (not necessarily true to the original English words) may or may not bring more fun to movies, so most demanding audiences not find boring, but forgetting the real meaning of translation.

HISTORY OF DUBBING PART 1 (SPANISH VERSION)

Today we're talking about the history of the dubbing. The video is in Spanish, so if you don't speak the language you can activate the YouTube subtitles option.

This dubbing reportage was made by a Colombian show. According with the video, the first dubbed movies were made  because the Americans wanted their movies to be shown in other countries, in this case Latin America

However, the films were in English and the people couldn't understand what the actors said, but when the producers added the subtitles, there were more problems because spectators were too lazy to read, they claimed not to be able to watch the movie for being reading word by word, besides they lost the important scenes.

One of the solutions given for this problem was to remake the films with actors belonging to every country where the movie were shown, but this failed because it was too expensive and spectators wanted the originals actors.

The dubbing was born by  accident, the locations were so noisy, so the actors had to dub their own voices, but they couldn't made the same work, here is when the voices over actors appear in scene.

"Gaslight" was the first movie with the process of dubbing made in New York, they used people that worked in radio. The first movie for kids was "Cinderella" .

WARNER BROS, ENTERTAINMENT INC, is a fully integrated, broad-based entertainment company and a global leader in the creation, production distribution, licensing and marketing of all forms of entertainment and their related businesses.

Warner Bros is one of the most prominent companies that distributes its material in several languages, although not everything produced by Warner Bros is destinated to be dubbed, some of their biggest productions (especially the larger film features) are later distributed in non-English speaking markets, such as Spanish, French and Portuguese.

Presently, controversy has aroused in Spain due to the fact that the voice actors for some of the most renowned actors such as: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Jenifer Aniston, John Cusack and Leonardo Dicaprio, which were the usual voice actors were replaced.

PROCESSES INVOLVED IN DUBBING

Dubbing is the process of recording and replacing voices on a film or television product after production and its original release. The term usually refers to the replacement of the dialogue spoken by actors in an original language other identical dialogues in another language.

The dubbing is also described as the process of rewriting lines of dialogue spoken by an "actor" in the original production, and must be replaced to improve the quality of audio or reflect changes dialog. Music also is folded into a movie after editing is complete. Films, videos and sometimes games are bent in the local language for the foreign market. The dubbing is common in films released in cinemas, TV series, cartoons and anime as its distribution abroad.

At the beginning of dubbing, because the material that you worked for mixtures was no photographic and digital as today, the method used was to make recordings of several pages of text that should be previously stored. To do scenes had to be tested before being recorded, both for good synchronization with the lip movements of the original cast, to mimic the interpretation thereof. Thus, dubbing like Gone with the Wind took many weeks of work.

Over the years this technique was being banished by the current system of dubbing rhythms, in which the dialogue is segmented into small pieces or Takes actors recorded reading a lectern after learning pace (especially the pauses) the original dialogue. This new technique speeds much the dubbing process although it is argued that this "mechanization" of the process has reduced artistic quality to it.

The dubbing into any language requires a specific form of the language. Thus, Spain has your local dubbing, made just for your market. In America a neutral, unique dubbing usually performed for all the Latin American market, mainly performed by actors from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile. Local terms that might cause confusion for other countries is usually an aspect that cares; for example, dubbing words like peanuts, soda or gum instead of peanuts, soda or gum, which are the terms used in Mexico are used.

In Mexico according to the law, the films shown in cinemas, optionally, in their original language with subtitles, or other well, in the dub (most of the time), while animated films and Children are bent compulsory.
