At the very beginning of this video we can see Brian Thon, an International Voice Over talent, coach, and producer. Brian develops voice over artists by teaching, coaching, mentoring, and producing professional voice talent.
In this video we can learn about the things that we have to know if we're interested in work like a voiceover artist.
We've to follow some steps:

  •  first one and the most important is to practice and to find the best way to record your voice, it means that it depends of the area that you want to use your voice for. 
  • Then when you've got your finally record of your voice, send to a lot of countries, preferably to the countries with more opportunities to have voiceovers artists.
"Such a voice" is a company dedicated to help people that want to be part of the voiceover area, Brian Thorn is the president of this company and of course he made this video for It, here he explains all the things that you've to know about this job, even the advantages about the pay, as sometimes the pay it's dreadful.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DUBBING

Characteristics of dubbing.

To provide a natural way to bent dialogues, used a technique called "adjustment" or adaptation that seeks to maintain the length of sentences and matches certain forms, especially those corresponding to the labial and occlusal, lyrics with the original text.

The most common dubbing  is  of the  films, series and video games. Foreign language films are often dubbed in the local language of their markets to increase their popularity and make them more accessible to audiences who do not like subtitles, bother them or have difficulty reading.

Sometimes the dubbing is a very powerful censorship because they can replace those fragments of dialogue of questionable morality by others that were more akin to the regime.

The most used methods are the lypsic dubbing (the most common, used in films, series and sometimes video games) and voice- over (used in documentaries).

STUDIOS: DISNEY

Disney is the company that has put more effort and attention in the Spanish dubbing of its productions, on both cinematic productions and television aimed shows and movies.

This is due to the audience for which Disney productions are usually aimed at, children and younger teens.
In the 1940's, Disney spanish versions were usually dubbed by an argentinian dubbing studio; later, however, the dubbing studios selected were located in California, under the direction of Edmundo Santes, who would later transfer to Mexico to take charge of the dubbing work.


In 1950, Cinderella, was the first Disney movie to be dubbed in Mexico.



Although at first many Disney movies were dubbed in Spain, from 1992 on forward, with Beauty and the Beast, Disney began to produce a Spanish version and a Latin version, with their very own lingos.

Disney was the first company that credited the voice actors of their dubbed productions by written ending credits.

In subbing there are three stages: 1st transcribing the original scripts; 2nd. “Despotting” or the division of the scripts into units of subtitles; 3rd translate the scripts into subtitles considering spatial-temporal restrictions.

COSTS
Subtitling costs are minimal because producing subtitles it’s a process made by just one person, who works in his/her own software.
In dubbing costs are higher, since it’s necessary to hire a whole team of voice actors, including a director, additionally, all the costs for the rent of a recording studio.

·         Relation with the traditions of every country

Producing subtitles tend to be preferred practice in countries that don’t have or never use to have funds to carry out the dubbing. Likewise, there are countries that prefer subtitles due to cultural or political reasons.
Dubbing it’s chosen by countries that are in a better economic situation due to high costs that represents. Cultural and political reasons are important in the time chosen.

·                              Experience on the public

Dubbed movies hide the foreign side of the origin culture, which make the public to have a closer experience of seeing a movie from its own culture. Dubbing is less demanding for the public that’s why is used for children’s programs or movies even in countries that have a subbing tradition.

DUBBING HISTORY




The American film industry was seriously affected at the beginning of the decade of the thirties due, first to the Great Depression that spread to all areas of the economy, the industry of film production did not escape this crisis, they thought the sound would be enough to reactivate it, however, it eventually became the main cause of American cinema’s loss of its large audience, Latin American and European fundamentally.

Hollywood's first attempt to win back the public that consisted of remaking films that had already become famous American stars, with foreign players in multiple languages.

It was thought at the option of subtitling but the large number of illiterate wasn’t viable. In addition to the language of film is largely based on images, same cannot be fully appreciated, if the public has focused its attention on reading subtitles.
The dubbing is consolidated from the sixties, with its ally the TV: it was allowed into the privacy of homes.

And it was the most effective mechanism to attract American film industry the Latin American audience once and for all.

To achieve success with Hollywood, dubbing had to spend time.
The actors had to perfect a technique that allowed them to lip sync and wing time intentions to allow the magic of believing that it was they themselves who spoke.
Dubbing itself emerged as a technical problem; outdoor scenes were heavily contaminated with the ambient noise, so the same actors should bend "Reset Dialog".



It is noteworthy that in many cases the same actors could not bend, failed to repeat their same tones or synchronization, as actors had to resort to more technical skill.
In 1944 two representatives were sent to Mexico by Metro Goldwyn Mayer in order to recruit actors to establish their studios in New York for Spanish dubbing.
They hired Luis de Llano Palmer to make this selection; it essentially called radio actors considering them more able to express themselves only through voice.





In New York the one commissioned to prepare these actors was Carlos Montalbán brother Ricardo Montalbán, who was already employed by MGM.
The first film to be dubbed in 1944 was Gaslight.

The reactions were diverse, first considered a serious competition for the national film industry; hence the Mexican government banned its exhibition in the early fifties.
Between 1947 and 1948 almost all hired actors gone to New York returned, since Mexico and Argentina had banned the display of dubbed films.
It’s in the late 40s when dubbing in Mexico begins to become more professional way. De la Riva in association with Monty Kleiban, built the first Dubbing company in Mexico: Rivaton de America.
There were also attempts to film dubbing in Churubusco studies attempt also failed by law prohibiting the dubbing for the movie theaters.

The dubbing of animated films was allowed.






TV is finally consolidating dubbing industry with series like I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Perry Mason, Doctor Kildare, Ben Casey, The Nurses, The Beverly Hillbillies.


One of the first series dubbed in Mexico was Cisco Kid in Rivatón.
Cast. Luis Aragon and Omar Jasso, and later Pedro De Aguillón are replacing Luis A.


The dubbing for television beginning in 1953, three years after the first television transmission made during the presidency of Miguel Alemán. The growing demand for foreign television programs because some entrepreneurs to open multiple dubbing rooms in our country.


One of the first series dubbed in Mexico was Cisco Kid.

In 1958 Ortigosa forms his own company in partnership with Robert W. Lerner. Becoming one of the most important, it shows were "I Dream of Jeannie", "Get Smart", "The Untouchables," "The Carol Burnett Show," etc.

CINSA was sold to Televisa in 1982.

Shortly after Thompkins & Associates closed, Enrique Candiani, son of CLASA manager, in association with Antonio Carvajal opened a dubbing room, known as Servicio Internacional de Sonido (SISSA).
Some series were The Count of Monte Cristo and others. 

It is said that at work in this room was very important Narciso Busquets, who took in his hands the direction of dubbing and it was very important part in the preparation of many actors. He had begun his experience in dubbing bending to the same national productions, from 8 years. 

This company was sold to Televisa in 1982. 

SUBTITLES



Subtitles are the texts that appear at the bottom of an image, often superimposed on it, providing additional information about the same or translating a narrative or dialogue conducted in a foreign language. Appreciated by moviegoers, for allowing hearing the voice of the original actor if it is not the language of production dominates, are also used to help improve the knowledge of a language, or as a substitute for the soundtrack for people with disabilities hearing. In Latin America the subtitles are widespread in theaters while stations broadcast television is common dubbing. In Spain, however, are restricted to a relatively specialized film circuit, projecting generally dubbed versions in other theaters and on television.

The subtitles respect the artist (actors or singers) since dubbing lacks precision in content, due to their need to at least try the dialogues matching the mouth movements through technical lip sync. Moreover phonetic declines, accents and other features of the original language are lost in the dub. No less important is the fact that a voice actor does not have the ability to reflect the emotions by the voice of some great artists or phonetics or diction of some of these corrections transmitted. 

Against the invasion subtitle has graphic screen space, which disrespects the graphic artist (director, photographer, set designer) and diverting attention to the action on the screen for those who really have to make use of these texts. Moreover, subtitle translations should concentrate and often more than summarized dubbing to facilitate reading comfortable pace.

Some television offer via teletext (Closed Caption), subtitles adapted for the deaf. When selecting the teletext page with the subtitles, the TV displays the image.
