ELEMENTS FOR DUBBING AND SUBTITLING

In subbing there are three stages: 1st transcribing the original scripts; 2nd. “Despotting” or the division of the scripts into units of subtitles; 3^rd translate the scripts into subtitles considering spatial-temporal restrictions.

COSTS

Subtitling costs are minimal because producing subtitles it’s a process made by just one person, who works in his/her own software.

In dubbing costs are higher, since it’s necessary to hire a whole team of voice actors, including a director, additionally, all the costs for the rent of a recording studio.

·         Relation with the traditions of every country

Producing subtitles tend to be preferred practice in countries that don’t have or never use to have funds to carry out the dubbing. Likewise, there are countries that prefer subtitles due to cultural or political reasons.

Dubbing it’s chosen by countries that are in a better economic situation due to high costs that represents. Cultural and political reasons are important in the time chosen.

Dark blue is dubbing for children only, otherwise subtitling. 

Purple is dubbing in all cases except non-children's films. Red is all dubbing.

Subbing allows the public to listen the original soundtrack and at the same time to understand the dialogs in its own language. Subtitles are really useful for people who are learning a second language or have a particular interest in the culture where the movie came from.

Dubbed movies hide the foreign side of the origin culture, which make the public to have a closer experience of seeing a movie from its own culture. Dubbing is less demanding for the public that’s why is used for children’s programs or movies even in countries that have a subbing tradition.
